Finally got the website back up and running again. The crash was a setback but a blessing in disguise because I like the new theme so much better. Although I still have some fine-tuning to do…
Now, on to today’s video training segment… At Police Dynamics, I try to keep things simple. So here is a simplified mission statement for supervisors.
Accomplishing pre-determined objectives through others.
As if just getting the job done was not hard enough, as a supervisor your job is even harder because you have to accomplish the organizational goals though the efforts of other people! So let’s break down this mission statement.
Accomplishing something by definition means bringing about change. So as a SuperVisor, you must be the instigator of change by creating an environment that is conducive to positive and effective change. Remember the Coactivity Maxim: the power for effective change rests within your relationships. This will put your decision-making and problem-solving skills to the test.
Pre-determined means that there is a strategic planning element to supervision. We’re not after random change, but change that has been pre-determined to move toward organizational goals. In other words, someone in a position of authority must make a decision about what direction the organization should take and then communicate that vision down the chain of command.
Objectives points to the value-based, goal-oriented nature of supervision. That’s one of the things that makes Police Dynamics and the character-initiative so powerful — they are value-based and goal-oriented.
Now, here’s the hard part. If I was just writing a simplified mission statement for an individual officer, I could stop right there. Their job is to accomplish pre-determined objectives…period. But your job is infinitely more complex and challenging because you have to get other people to do the work. And that’s not easy. It requires all of your leadership skills of motivation, delegation, training, equipping, mentoring, coaching, communication, evaluating, and disciplining.
Because a failure to motivate is a failure to lead. A failure to delegate is a failure to lead. A failure to train is a failure to lead. A failure to equip, to mentor, to coach, to communicate, to evaluate, and to discipline are all leadership failures. So if your officers are failing to accomplish the pre-determined objectives, first check to be sure it is not due to a leadership failure on your part…
I just made it into your website and enjoyed your rich teaching on SUPERVISION. It is filet mignon, from eternal principles of truth and I am sure your rich experiences of life and law enforcement.
Come and visit me in Beijing.
Sincerely,
Eric
